URLs getting shortened

Why is this happening? Does it have to? Can it be stopped?

The URLs work, but the auto-editing of what is displayed obscures what is being searched for.

I would suggest that it also prevents someone knowing the URL before they click on it, blindly following a URL can lead to all sorts of problems if you don't know where you are going - suh as malware, viruses, phishing etc.
