That IS good news Small step to greater things.Blimey there may well be hope yet ? I see that Pakistan parliament
passed legislation yesterday passing tougher sentences for honour killings & hope fully (?) closing a loop hole in current law ?
More than a 1000 victims (woman) were victims of honour killings in Pakistan last year , but any conviction rate was close to zero. The bill has been debated for months was passed, despite a last ditch effort to block it.
Religious groups routinely denounce any attempt to bolster womans rights in Pakistan as "un-Islamic" . The Governmant were stung into action by a series of gruesome honour killings , including a 17 year old girl who was handcuffed to a bed by her mother doused in petrol & burnt alive
The Question remains over how vigorously the law will be enforced particularly in rural areas were woman are rarely seen in public & the patriarchy is unassailable
DNA evidence will also for the 1st time be able to be used in court for rape & sexual assault on children, again this was after fierce opposition from religious groups.
(wonder how many honour killings were against woman who refused to marry there cousin ?)
