using a 3 gang 1 way switch for 2 lights

L is the same as C

C, COM or COMMON are all the same. (just abbreviated)

The different coloured circles just indicate which terminals relate to an individual switch on the front.

Yes put the spare wire into small terminal block.

Note to self: Do not buy any of those Legrand switches, what a nightmare.

I wonder how they engineer a 3 gang 2-way switch……...

Now that it is wired correctly, it works perfectly and looks very good.

Working does not mean it is safe or will remain working for long.

Can you confirm it has a plastic front and not a metal or metal coated plastic front.

If it is a counterfeit item then be prepared for problems.

Legrand also co-operates actively with Customs, judicial authorities, or governments, according to the country. The Group relies on a network of local informants and the experienced eye of its sales personnel. Since 2006, 3.6 millions counterfeit wiring devices (switches, socket outlets) and circuit breakers, featuring the Legrand, Tenby and BTicino brands, as well as 16 counterfeit production moulds have been seized
That 3.6 million is the tip of the iceberg of fakes as these are those reported and include large consignments siezed by Customs Officers and trading standards. Many other fake items are bought on line by individuals but never reported when they fail to work.

A simple, and wise, thing for Bill to do would be to ask Legrand in the UK to at least confirm that they do make a switch like the one he bought.
