My foster puppy has chewed through the vacuum cleaner cable (she then peed on it - I think she might be trying to kill me)

What’s the safest most secure way to repair instead of replacing the whole cable?

Would the cable length become unusably short if you wired a plug on at the break?

Yeah, it’s about 4 feet from the connection into the hoover and I don’t have the relevant tool to open up the body to rejoin it inside. The top of the screw is like a multi pointed star

Without changing the cable, you could try a round flex connector; it may be less likely to snag on furniture - perhaps something like this?

Or, get a security bit set to open up the cleaner; they aren't too costly.

Thank you all. Do you reckon I might be better just to put it in for replacement cable? Might wait till we get over the chewing phase though. I’ve got a spare hoover so I won’t be getting out of doing it

I got one of these to do a quick repair whilst I have a piranha pup. The flex has got like cotton threads wrapping around the live and neutral. Do I need to keep that wound round up to the connector or can I trim it off?

Trim them off in the connector.
They are there to increase "flexibility" in the cable.

If you're using a joining connector, consider shortening the cable at the appliance end so the connector is near the handle, so it is not trailing and will not snag on the furniture.

you can get a connector for garden appliances that is a plug and socket, so you could unplug the rest of the cable and put it in a cupboard if the puppy is likely to attack it again.

The Duraplug is very resilient. It is like a hard rubber shell. 2 pin and 3 pin are available depending how many cores your flex has. You need a pair, male and female. The male end with the pins goes on the appliance, and the female end with the sockets goes on the supply cable. This is very important. There are unbranded imports which may not be good.

TAKE THE FUSE OUT OF THE PLUG ON YOUR DAMAGED CABLE SO NOBODY CAN MAKE IT LIVE AND DANGEROUS BY PLUGGING IT IN.
