VAG DSG Gearboxes

Ah, right! Understood. Is it worth getting the chain and/or tensioner changed at some mileage interval - or is it a case if it's not broke (rattling), don't touch it?

As I udnerstand it, the DSG boxes have a tinkling sound as heard from inside the cabin, but it sounds a lot worse outside the cabin. As is also bad news

Never heard any unusual noises from the DSG gearbox's inside the cabin or outside (had 6 dsg'S in the past and OH has one at present) tinkling sound would need investigation.

Although owning many DSG gearbox cars,i would not buy secondhand if over 12 months or 20k miles as heard many nightmares about these gearbox's.

Although they are expected to last the life of the car, if I bought one, I'd consider myself to be well into borrowed time at 40K

No. But its easier and cheaper than replacing it when it's broke, jumped some teeth and smashed up all the valves, camshafts and timing case!

Can't argue with that logic...

Is it an engine-out job? Or removal of major components (Chain n tensioner replacement, that is)

As above, make sure it's been serviced properly. When i bought my golf gti, i was looking at DSG. This was in 2007/8. There was a chap in the US who had issues with his Audi which had reached 40K. Turned out to be the mechatronics unit and whilst it was fixed under warranty, it put me off DSG. Out of warranty, the unit is £1000.

Having said all that, having sat in and driven a friend's car which had DSG, my next car (if I stick with VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda) will definitely be DSG.

I was reading about a DSG box on an Audi A4 failing outside warranty and Audi wanted something like £7k for a new box.

Looking at the schematic in Wikipedia, am I right in thinking that you lose the benefits of a DSG if you shift "first third fifth" I.e. It can only do the near-instant-shift if you gear sequentially? Is is even possible to skip gears with them (is there a traditional gear knob, or is it paddle only?)
