I have a vaillant combi boiler, problem with central heating. From cold, will run for half hour, reach temperature, then trip out. Then will not fire up again. Pump running ok, radiators bled. Changed the obvious thermostat on CH output, but still not working. Any ideas? or any idea where i can download the manual for trouble shooting.

Is this Vaillant the VCW or VUW version of the 242? If you don't know, can you describe the control panel - plastic/metal, colours, etc.?

Obvious? Without even having seen a manual?

This boiler has a complex and unusual control system. Not really one for DIY tampering. You need to find a boiler engineer with knowledge of this particular boiler - many won't have a clue and will just try to sell you a new boiler. It's basically a good, well engineered boiler worth repairing if you can find a competent person.

Good on you Chris. Took the words out of my mouth.

Hi.. the boiler has a time delay on it and it sounds like yours is kaput.
The fault will be on one of the pcb's (can't remember which one off hand).
Echo what the others have said really. Definitely repairable but by someone who is clued up on these boilers.

Had that before, replaced ignition pcb and sorted it out, try ebay or hrpc
The diverter micro switches will also need checking as the div can stick and cause similar fault

May also need main motherboard 9 times out of 10 will be ig board.

My firm cover n.herts beds n.bucks

Be very careful before buying a pcb because there are different versions of this boiler (hybrid/non hybrid).

many thanks for the help, looks like it is the ignition board, as if I power down once it has tripped on the temperature set, then power up again, all works fine till the next temp trip

power down ........ power up
Would that be switch off and switch on? I suppose this power down stuff comes from the US.

Check the dc voltage on terminal 7 of the control box and tell us what you get. Also pull off the thermostat knob and see what colour the spindle is, this will identify the board you have and possibly save you from a complete board replacement.
