Since October, motorists have not been required to display their VED.

VED is now automatically cancelled once a vehicle changes hands. The previous owner can only claim back full months and the new owner required to pay for VED for the vehicle immediately.

According to statistics, this "nice little earner" is providing the government with an estimated £38m.

If you buy a second hand car privately, how do you drive it home legally if it has no road tax and you havn't yet received the log book?

The tax information will stay on the system until dvla receive the v5 to change owners.

I guess one way round it would to do a deal with the seller/new owner, not to send off the v5 till near the end of the month.

I haven't taxed my new van yet as its still taxed till June, (previous owner) as I didn't get the v5 when I brought it.

Doesn't affect me and will apply for log book end of May.

Trouble with that is the seller may have difficulty if the new owner clocks up some speeding camera fines in the time between collecting car and telling DVLC.

True but v5 isn't proof of ownership.

As long as you both have a receipt.

But I can't see people liking doing it to be fair.
