Vertical flue detached from boiler in loft

I don't expect that to go back together without cutting off perhaps 70mm.

But to make up for the shorter length it would be necessary to pull the terminal down by the same distance.

Its up to the RGI on the day but a kind of repair could be made by adding JUST a new section of outer tube and joining it with a suitable air tight clamp.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think it would fit back in as it stands but it's only the very end of the pipe that is the issue. Is an option to saw off the bottom inch of the black pipe so it is circular again? Assuming the pipe would still reach of course.

Just trying to understand options before spending a fortune getting someone on the roof.

I do go further afield but only for complicated repairs where no one else seems to want to do it.

Usually don't go further than Cov for normal repairs.

Give him a price Tony! £89+travel covered? Depends how much he wants you! You could even take a straight flue bit with you to see if its doable there and then.

As I said, I only go further away than Cov when its something complicated that no one else wants to do.

This is a very simple problem and any local RGI should be happy.

We don't which part of Brum he is in, it could be the Black Country for all we know.

But it would help if the OP would pull the flue terminal down and see if there is some free movement.

We have also not been told want the original RGI is going to do. So far all he has done is to cut the gas pipe to the boiler and adding to the work now required. It would be normal to expect him as the original engineer on site to offer a solution.

I am really grateful for the replies, this is a great forum.

The RGI has said he would need to replace the whole vertical flue, requiring a cherry picker to access the roof. If the part is not available, he said I would require a entire new boiler. He will confirm tomorrow what his solution is.

I do think it sounds a little dramatic, the boiler isn't great but it does everything we need.

I live South Birmingham by the way, just off J3 of the M42. I'll update you when I know more tomorrow!

Oh and I'll see how much give is in the flue turret first thing tomorrow.

Cutting the gas supply pipe may be a correct procedure but a proposing and instigating a repair is a better one.

There are other solutions which just a minute amount of lateral thinking would achieve at minimal cost.

If it were necessary to cut say 70mm off the bottom of the flue terminal then I am sure that it would only be a very minor modification to the pipework between the boiler and the base of the flue terminal without needing cherry pickers or a new terminal! Always amazes me how so many dont look at the obvious cheaper solution. Or perhaps its just because I have never been on the "fleece the customer course"!

I used to turn off the M42 at J3 to go and stay with a lady in Kings Eath.

Its also just beyond my ex-colleague's village home in Ullenhall where they were without mains power for about a week. But being an engineer he rigged up his generator to the CH boiler so he kept warm. Donk know why he did not do that to the freezer and instead claimed for the loss of £150 of frozen food. He was very fond of lobster and expensive sea food.
