Thanks for that - blimey I am afraid I don't knwo all the answers to those questions! But I beleive is is a pumped gravity system, floor boiler (Potterton CF 60 as I stated) - in a Victorian House.
I woudl ratehr not have all the upheaval really - although I take your points re fuel consumption and regulation. The thing is I have been more than happy with the whole system until the work done and the boiling hot radiators - it seems a fairly efficient system and the house is rarely cold.
