Yes but like already said, this will prevent back flow contamination in to wholesome water, so as far as air gap at waste is concerned, although a secondary protection in case of failure, is it a requirement?
Obviously not, the water suppliers will be concerned about whether you contaminate their supply but not if you fill your drum full of crap & contaminate your washing because you didn't install the machine properly.
