The kettle noise bit is the sound you get as your kettle heats up i.e. water being heated by the element. With your hot water supply to the machine turned off the washer should heat the cold water using the element. If this is working then this isn't the problem. What Breezer was getting at was that the machine will wait for certain things to happen before going on to the next part of the cycle. If the temperature never reaches its programmed heat setting because the element is broken then the machine will simply sit there.
Similarly with other things e.g. won't spin until water's drained, won't wash until filled with water etc. Too clever for their own good!
If any one thing is wrong the cycle won't complete.
Did you manage to check that it was draining OK?
If you've given up and don't want to call an engineer in and are considering a new machine then I would opt for a washing machine rather than washer dryer as the latter tend to be more unreliable.
