Its less than a year old and it has a sealed lid. Its more pongy when the rain hasn't topped it up for a while. You can smell the 'oak' in it as well and possibly a bit of old sherry. I think that's what they used it for before it got regenerated into a water butt. Perhaps the pong will wear off eventually; or should I put something in it to sterilise the water.

Maybe it will help to flush it through in this rainy weather to remove accumulated rubbish. I reckon it has organic matter in that is rotting. Leaves are a common cause.

I use a water purifier once a week. Just a capful per butt seems to do the job. They usually sell it near the water diverters.
