These filters can be of some benefit but I don't believe a health benefit has been shown and in my opinion the people selling them are often disingenuous crooks.
chlorine gas is made of two chloride molecules and has the formula Cl2. It is used to disinfect water as it kills bacteria, viruses and amoeba.
In water it exists in an equilibrium:
Cl2 + H2O <-> HCl + ClOH
these molecules exist in equilibrium with their salts eg. HCl <-> H+ = Cl-
Your tissue fluid (the fluid which bathes the cells of your body) contains 110mmol of Chloride ions, which is far higher than is found in tap water. You are also more acidotic that tap water hich would shift the equation to the left. As such you produce more Chlorine gas than tap water.
If the water is not free of organic molecules, when being chlorinificated, then chlorine can react with these molecules to make stuff which might be toxic. That is true and is why they are monitored for by water companies.
however, if there are health benefit of these filters why have they not proved that? If they could show a benefit then think of all the money they would generate because everyone would then get one. The trial would be simple: get a few thousand volunteers an randomly give half real filters and the other half dummy filters. Then see who is healthier. Simple. do you not think it odd that they haven't done this?
and if you look at their website you can see what a bunch of crooks they are:
from the energiseyourlife website you linked too:
1) "Improves indoor air quality (by reducing chloroform gas produced by evaporation of chlorine in the water)."
chloroform is an anaesthetic and has the formula CHCl3. There is a carbon atom in it. How does CL2 miraculously ontain a carbon atom merely by evaporating? Chlorine can become chloroform if it reacts with something like methane. we produce more methane and chlorine than tap water- if the effect was significant why are we all not permanently anaesthetised?
But then again maybe it explains why cows are so dopey
2) "Healthy water throughout the entire household for about 32p a day!"
It was already healthy. In-fact as the filters remove the chlorine more bugs can grow; which is ok if it's fresh but what if you go on holiday for a few weeks or drink from the cold water tank?
3) "you'll notice softer skin and hair in just a few days by bathing in chlorine/chemical free water"
water is a chemical; H2O! H2O free water!
F******s
As for fluoride the benefits in terms of dental health is well known (see the cochrane collaboration) whilst the evidence that drinking water with the appropriate fluoride content causing fluorosis is weak. furthermore skeletal fluorosis is extremely rare in the west. By installing one of these filter you would increase the risk of dental health problems.
The choice is obviously yours as to whether or not to fork out hundreds of pounds for one of these filters but you should remain skeptical of the claims made and have a look into the underlying science.
