Softened water does taste different simply because it no longer has all the original minerals. It also has slightly more salt in it due to the softening process -- maybe not a lot, but more so with harder water.

No it doesn't.
It does however contain a tiny amount of sodium bicarbonate (as used in baking powder, soluble paracetamol, some indigestion remedies)
The sodium content is very small.
A radiator falling off the wall is not a little snag - it's a total disaster caused by utter incompetence.
