In that case, why do you think that the pump was running and yet water was not coming out?
I could hear it running ok downstairs, but no water was coming out, i pulled the string pull to activate the pump for quite a while, you used to be able to turn on tap, pull the cord for a short time then release the cord and as long as the tap is on the pump stays on.
You seem to have interpreted the question "why do you think no water was coming out" as meaning "how did you activate the pump and for long did you keep it switched on".

So, to clarify, what I'm asking is: since you question my assertion that the pump wasn't air locked, what do you think is the cause of it failing to move water from the cylinder to the outlet?

Only had the house for about 8 months. no manufacturers instructions were left.
I hope you'll excuse me bawling at you for a moment, but

I posted you a link to the manufacturer's instructions.
