I want to make some bread pudding.
all of the recepies I have seen are in weights but I don't have a set of scales..
anyone know of a guide for converting wights to cups / spoons measurements?

or failing that can anyone weigh 50g of butter and tell me how many spoons it is roughly?

A standard packet of butter is 250 grams, so 50grams is a fifth. Get you're tape measure out its about 20mm.

ah see, that's the problem, I've only got "I can't believe it's not butter" and it comes in a tub and is half empty.. .. :)

Then go and buy some real butter because believe it or not I can't believe it's not butter isn't butter and not what's asked for in the recipe.

And it should turn out beautiful!

Anyway, why are you weighing the butter?
You spread it on each slice of bread, layer the bread with a good layer of currants on top then the next layer et al till you have filled the basin then add the milk and sugar.

Simples.

Conny, that's bread and butter pudding, a completely different beast..
bread pud you soak the bred and mash it into a paste then add the milk, eggs, butter and then the saltanas, currents or whatever fruit you want to use and stick it in a dish to bake..

I took a stab at it and it turned out good..

as for the tenner for a set of scales, I've been unemployed for 12 months, I can't afford a tenner... :(

Most trades around here ( W.Berks ) are quite fortunate in that they haven't been too badly affected by the recession, which we aren't out of by any stretch of the imagination. Hopefully your luck will change mate :)

Back to the OP, I loves me a nice bit of bread pud !!

Sounds nice Col,
what do you soak the bread in before mashing it into a paste?
Water or Brandy?
Know what I'd prefer!

water, sice you drain most of it off and squeeze it out it'd be a waste of brandy to send it all down the drain..
nothing to say you can't add brandy to the mix .. just substitute some of the milk for it..

you can mash a couple of bananas into the mix instead of some milk for a bit of a change..

1 loaf made a 12 inch square, 1 inch thick pudding.. and that was 4x what the recipe called for..
