the CTEC is an all in one charger, so wont be at risk of overcharging, it does have a bulk charge facility, but then drops, and maintains a float charge

if you take a look at the spec given on the site from the OP http://www.calamander.co.uk/batteryconditioners/ctek3600.htm the CTEK is designed for this use, so cant see how it unsuitable.

I know people that have used these for quite while on cars, boats, bikes, and on caravan leisure batteries, and not had any problems with battery life.

I thank you for your response.
The lead from the charger to the positive battery post terminal is fully insulated right up to the eyelets that attach to the battery clamp bolts.

To anybody else who is interested. This battery charger can be left switched on for months at a time, WHILE IT IS ATTACHED TO THE BATTERY IN THE CAR and it is not cheap rubbish that should be consigned to the bin but a top of the range charger which cost me £50 over a year ago.

It is part of the equipment issued with new Ferraris, Porches, BMW and other top of the range cars, and I hardly think they would lend their name to cheap rubbish

The reason I need a charger like this is because my car only does 8 miles every fortnight. It is 14 years old and has only done 18000 miles since the day I bought it brand spanking new!

To the person who told me to get my alternator fixed. The alternator was renewed only months ago!

As it should be, the fuse if fitted is there to protect your car should the insulation be unable to cope with the mechanical stress and wear from vibration and / or heat and subsequently fail putting a dead short across the battery which will make the wire glow white hot until it melts.

It would also protect your car from fire should the output of the charger develop a fault and go short circuit. Which is NOT un-known and that is just one reason why good quality chargers will have a fuse in their output as close to the terminal as possible.

That's a minimum of 60p/mile for vehicle tax alone.

Plus petrol (likely to be high on a 14 year old car with an engine and gearbox which are always cold), insurance, depreciation, finance costs (or opportunity costs if you didn't need to borrow the money), maintenance.

Utterly barmy - sell it and use taxis.

Oh - and BTW - doing nothing but short journeys will damage the engine.

Everybody tells me to sell the car and use taxis. I stopped smoking and eating fatty foods. This is my only pleasure in life ;)

The car will be colder now as I don't have a garage at this place I moved to!

I also thought you might to know in relation to the help you gave me with fitting a light in the loft a few weeks back using cable from a 10Kw shower, the house hasn't burned down yet.
