what car?

The new car is a beast, pushing over 650bhp..
Ya blo.ody barmpot!
Got a re-mapped 150bhp golf diesel myself - now about 190bhp and 300ftlbs torque - fast and about 35+ mpg round town, 45-60 mpg on Mway. Not in the same league as the stuff you're looking at though matt.

I would also recommend avoiding a BMW - had a 535 sport a few years back and was the worst car mistake I've made (apart from the TR6).

 If all goes to plan and i get my cage made for my other toy, then i might just be getting let lose with 1500bhp in my top fuel dragster  And to think i moan about MPG now!

Make the 650bhp feel like a kids toy

e34 or e39?

There both rubbish!

you are both mental

the e39 can be dodgy in areas but the e34 is superb car. ive had two and would have a third if i could find the right one.

the m30 3.5 engine is fantastic if a little dated, i even had one transplanted into my 3 series, god i miss that car

Shame you are put off beemers, the 335D would have kept up with your then M3 and remapped they are insane and still doing a trillion miles to the tank :)

I'd stick German and derv, good luck

Indeed, the E34 M5 engines were bullet proof, I had E34 M5, then E46 M3 and then E60 M5 which I hated  The e34 M5 does the Nordschlieffe as quick as the 5.0l V10 E60   :D

Like I said matt, we move in different circles. If I could afford your car then maybe we could talk.
However, I'm a diesel convert now. I have come to dislike having to thrash a petrol engine and favour the easy power and torque of a diesel. Not to mention the fuel economy!

I've had a few diesels recently and was pleasantly surprised... nice big surges of torque coming easily, just pushing you along without too much effort. That torque all comes right in the middle so it feels like it's always there and the car is potent. Which sounds great.

But, when you actually NEED some torque to overtake, it becomes far more fussy and dramatic than a petrol. The engines are too peaky for my liking, I want a nice spread of power across the range, not just a big dollop 500rpm wide in the middle.

Plus those big clouds of soot they spew out when the pedal is planted just aren't right
