Having replaced my CH pump & replaced some partially blocked feed/vent pipework:cool:, I have noticed the CH header tank water getting very dark with a small amount of brownish scum. Is this indicative of anything undesirable?????

Presumably I am getting a better 'scrubbing' effect from the new pump actually getting some flow around the entire system. Otherwise, no nasty boiler noises, reassuringly hot rads, no rad cold spots, and no pump-over or leaks.

Previously, I attempted to solve the underlying problem (blocked pump vane inlet) by flushing the system with SuperFloc when the old pump was in place, and refilled with Fernox inhibitor. I plan to similarly re-flush & refill, but I would be grateful for any insight before I do so.

Cheers All.

Hi Kev,

You asked 'whats a "pump vane inlet "?'

CH pump consists of two disks with vanes between. Outlet flow is kind of along circumference of these disks. Inlet is at the centre of the disk furthest from the motor, near the pump return on the casing. This inlet to the vanes was blocked with gunge. (I was getting some flow, but this must have been coming from the the outer surface of the disks!)

Perhaps I should have used another term instead of 'vane', e.g. 'impeller blade'.

Any comment on the water colour?

COuld be some sort of algae - you can get stuff for that too.

you seemed to have answered your own quire. a good flush is what it needs.

what speed is your pump running at ? as this could be causing the system to pump over, oxidizing the water
