Laying a patio, 2.5m x 2.5m of 500sq slabs. What hardcore should I be using? I won't be driving on it and so MOT type 1 seems a bit overkill. Although I can't seem to find anything else. TBH, I don't really know what I want to be looking for.
With regards quantities, any ideas how much I need to order of hardcore, sand and cement? The bulk bags seem to come in 800kg weight, not sure about volume.

Type 1 is cheap. No point cutting corners. You will find broken bricks very uneven and difficult to compact.
You say that but Travis Perkins want £71 a ton bag.
The young lad coming to lay it for me has stated 1.5 tonne. It just seems a lot and a waste to have to order two bags and only use half of the second one and when a) one bag will do and b) Type 1 is overkill for a pedestrian traffic only, patio.

You are going to struggle to find anything else suitable at a cheaper price. I certainly wouldn't build a patio without Type 1 and don't know of any reputable contractor that would put their name to a patio that doesn't have a proper sub-base. I wouldn't want to be cursing 2 years down the line when the paving is uneven.

Fair point. Thanks
