What have you been doing today?

Popped up to the workshop to pick up some C&G certificates for a student who has a job interview next week. While I was there I had a bit of a tidy up. I cleared out the storage shed and dragged out the four 6’x4’x12mm ply boards that I’m going to use to re-skin my gates. Currently the frames are clad in 19mm ply, been on for 6 years but are a bit weathered now as you can see!

Plan is to remove gates, strip old ply off of the frames, remove frames and wooden posts from concrete posts, fit new studs to posts using a chemical anchor and rebolt everything using the new panels. I gave the new panels their first coat of preservative today. Been meaning to do this since September 2019!

Bit early to say but it was certainly interesting. I even get an office with a desk and computer! :)

As for the dentist. I have been terrified of them my whole life but my wife found one who treats children with autism. She explained my fears to the dentist and she, (the dentist), first used a gel to numb my gums before injecting them. Because I have CKD my gums had receded making all but one of my teeth slightly loose. My wife sat with me helping me to control my breathing and in all I had 18 removed in one sitting and felt great afterwards.

Through shear fear, I didn’t go to the dentists between the ages of 21 and 46 - so that’s 25 years without seeing a dentist! I tried several times, even going to those that specialised in very nervous patients. Finally found one that I got on with and ended up getting 25 years of loose/missing/cracked/stained fillings replaced. I won’t lie, I was a trembling bundle of nerves and the dread started about a week before the appointment - even to the point of not being able to sleep. Anyway, it was never as bad as I thought it would be and now it really doesn't bother me at all. Like Conny, I was given the bubblegum flavoured gel before the injections but injections don’t really bother me that much anyway. In fact, once I got used to it, I went back and had a couple of my amalgam fillings removed and replaced with white ones. The dentist always used to joke that I had more teeth than him and he’s 20 years younger than me - I had my first and only tooth taken out a couple of years ago. I had root canal treatment a month or so ago too and when it had settled down, I had to have the temporary filing removed to fit a permanent one. Co-incidentally, the weekend before the final filling, the filling came loose from another tooth that had root canal work done nearly 10 years ago so I had that replaced at the same time. Because both those teeth had no nerves, I had them drilled and filled without any injections! The only thing I don’t like is the cleaning. I go every six months and alternate between checkup and clean. He's private though so not cheap but worth every penny in my mind.

Ha ha, you can spend spare time on DIYnot and get paid for it (!). Glad ok so far - interesting is always good.

Teeth - you poor thing, all those in one go. I didn't realise that CKD can make your gums recede - very unfair, considering have enough to cope with.

25 years - and you've nearly still got all your teeth - impressive. You must have good teeth! Bet that cost a pretty penny, doing all that. My better half has all his teeth, bar one like you and just one filling. He only lost one tooth because a tesco sarnie had a stone in it and he cracked his tooth biting down.. His teeth are white & lovely too - always taken very good care of them and the dentist says he has the best teeth he's ever seen on someone his age. I'm quite envious :)

I'm having 2 implants. When I was in my 20's, I had an abscess that had no pain, found it during a routine check up. Sadly, the dentist, while dealing with the tooth ok, left a little pocket of god knows what in my gums, high up. After a couple of years, it caused another abscess on the next tooth - which did bloomin hurt and make me look like the elephant man. Had oral surgery on the roof of my mouth to clean out the original pocket of gunk to stop it spreading further and sorted the tooth with more surgery above in the gum. Fast forward a lot lot of years, those teeth have finally had it, and need to come out. I have a bit of bone loss, due to the teeth being dead and also age, so have to do the bone graft too. Tomorrow, I have a 2 hour appointment to take the teeth out and start the implants. He's also going to clean my teeth too which I've not had done in years (pain), and also make me something so I can use whitening treatment at home. Seemed daft not to try and make it look as good as I can, considering the whole lot is going to cost me over £6k. I am quite nervous, keep telling myself that it's only 2 hours of my life and it will go but I don't think I'll sleep well tonight :) :)
 
My wife’s mate had one implant and that needed a bone graft too. Yeah, not cheap at all and took a while for it all to be sorted. She suffered infection after infection with it too before it was all sorted. Now if I had that coming up, I think I would be more than a bit nervous! I hope it all goes well for you. (y)

Well at least there is something we can agree on!

Treatment nowadays is so much less painless, but it's the nagging thought of the pain in bygone years that feeds the fear!

Jeez..Conny...A lot!...My dentist years ago was a nightmare...His breath stunk of fags...He tipped the chair that far back stuff fell out of your pockets...He used extremely bright,hot lights..Injected anaesthetic with a huge needle then filled the teeth before it worked,leaving your mouth to numb up for about 4 hours afterward..Thankfully dentistry has improvedthough I have never had gel i don't think.
 
My present Dentist once told me he was not very good at suturing,his mate was much better.....As he was stitching my gum up!... Comic timing!
 
Well, just back from the dentist.
Doesn't hurt (apart from injections), and I especially asked for the gel you guys talked about! Felt left out.

Implant stuff doesn't hurt while doing it, not in the slightest but now they're wearing off, I can honestly say it bloomin hurts. Face is half swollen, got a bag full of goodies - pain killers, anti-inflams and some antibiotics. No bone graft needed though in the end, which is cool. Didn't much fancy someone else's bone!
