hi if your gov says he wants you to put a cooker switch
directly over the top of the cooker on the wall
and i said no way ... what do you reckon .. cheers

IEE Guidance Note 1 said:
page 149: "Assessment of the risks associated with the installation of a cooker control unit should always be made."

page 150: "The control switch should be placed in a readily accessible position" (reg 476-03-04).

In particular, you will need to consider whether it will be possible to operate the switch in the event of a fire on the hob.
 
Depends how much you want the money, and whether he expects you to sign it off as safe.
