What level of skill and maintenance does a power planer require?

I'm normally planning or chiselling the same type of wood for the same reason, so it works almost all the time.

But what Im really saying is that I don't actually check the angles, and sharpen/hone by eye. I might use a guide once or twice a year if it looks like my edges need adjusting.

I do use mortice chisels, I don't really check those either, but yes they are at a greater angle.
