Hi my house is 1930's and I was doing something under the floor boards and found some black conduit with what looks like fiber cloth covered cables inside. They are stranded and all cut off, ie not connected so don't worry. They are singles and thicker than 2.5mm. I tried scratching the metal strands but I still not sure I can see any copper so are they likely to be copper covered cable or are they aluminium or something?

quite likely tinned copper.

They should be out of use if they are covered in rubber and cotton.

Why do you ask?

In the 30's and 40's a shortage / price of copper did lead to some cables being made with aluminium instead of copper. Though I believe these were mostly single stranded.
