Hi

I have a corner of my property that needs repointing. I intend to get a builder in but previous experience has taught me that it's wise to have an understanding of the job in hand when assessing which tradesman to employ.

The property was built in 1934 and my questions are:
  • How easy will this mortar colour be to match? Presumably the use of a dye should aid this if the sand/cement can't be exactly matched.
  • What ratio of cement to sand should be used? I understand the importance of ensuring that the mortar is not stronger than the brick.
  • What's the likely hood of lime being used in the original mortar?
Here is a picture of the corner (the damage is further up, I was leaning out of a window).

Most of the brickwork is covered by pebble-dash render. Just the bricks under the bay and the corners are exposed.

Thanks for your help (y)
