How long do you have??

In a nut-shell: communism: everything becomes state-owned (with the best intention for the nation in mind) and is then distributed equally among everyone in the nation.

socialism: who earns most pays most = sharing of wealth in a different way.

Mind you: read the first three words correctly: IN A NUT-SHELL

I was going to suggest that they are not alternatives as such, rather that communism is a more focussed subset within the broader spectrum of socialist viewpoints. Speaking off the top of my head, I believe that socialism has more of a sense of 'the people' having a more direct involvement with the running of 'the state' for the mutual good, whereas in communism there is a more defined 'state' acting for the good of the 'people'.

Why are ex-communists socialists ? Well, I suppose everyone is supposed to move to the right with age.......

IMHO it has more to do with the fact that communism never really gets to the point where everything is distributed equally to the people (human 'nature' gets in the way: power corrupts etc) and that disappoints peoples who thought that everyone - 'The People' - would benefit (as is the 'plan' with socialism).

I thought under socialism everything was also state owned, it certainly was until Maggie sold some it off.

Although at the moment our socialism seems to have moved to the right, most of the core socialist still believe in state ownership and state power.

And isn’t the communist ideal of everyone being equal the same as taking money from the rich and giving it to the poor?

I was thrown out of The Socialist Workers Party many years ago when I started employing staff ,lol...lol...lol...an looked at as a capitalist ,lol....lol..lol
