Pacifist, now socialist?

Because corporations cannot be trusted to voluntarily protect the environment, they require regulation.

I...asked why Jeff Bezos - with all the reports about his staff's poor conditions - did not pay them better and maybe settle for just ONE hundred billion for himself.
The reply was "Because he doesn't have to".

A handful of companies, such as Amazon, earn more than the GDP of many countries, and have more power than the governments of some countries. How can these companies be regulated?

How can these companies be regulated?

Good question point.

I like to think that I regulate who I buy off by choosing to buy off only those companies I respect.

I used to be a big customer of Amazon, until that day their delivery van driver hung around long enuff for a brief chat.

Amazon does a lot of good things & it does a lot of bad things, most folk don't GAF as long as it's here next day.

And here is a good example

"The founder of Richer Sounds is handing control of the hi-fi and TV retail chain to staff, in a move that will also give employees large cash bonuses.
Julian Richer will announce to staff on Tuesday that he has transferred 60% of his shares into a John Lewis-style trust. Richer, who recently turned 60, said the “time was right” to pass the baton to the chain’s 531 employees."

“My father dropped down dead at 60 so I am very keen for this to happen in my lifetime,” explained Richer. “I felt the time was right, rather than leaving it until I’m not around, to ensure the transition goes smoothly and I can be part of it. I still really, really care but it is time for the next generation.
The company will pay Richer an initial £9.2m for the stake but the businessman is giving £3.5m of that back to staff, who will receive £1,000 for every year they have worked for the retailer."

The Monarchy is a net contributor, financially, to the UK, and we need every penny.

I have to admit, for me the money aspect (in terms of what they bring in) is almost irrelevant, it's the whole concept of a royal family that doesn't rest easy with me. As for all the land and property they own, where did the wealth originally come from that enabled this?

That aside, thanks for the replies all :)

William the Conqueror stole the whole country - England - and shared it out.

Half for himself - the Crown, a quarter to the Barons and a quarter to the Church.

It has been nearly all (80% I think) just passed down ever since.

Plus the above then plundered more from Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Do you know the Crown owns the seabed out to a distance of eleven miles and the off-shore wind farms have to pay rent increasing the cost of the electricity by 15%

I posted last week with some self-reasoning that suggested I might be becoming a pacifist. I now wonder if I'm also becoming a socialist?

Whilst I can't claim to be 100% socialist (if indeed such a thing can be measured that way) I find myself thinking the industries our country requires to maintain social mobility (in the physical sense of the word) and that underpin our infrastructure should not be in private hands. So things like public transport, the healthcare system and our utilities.

Whilst I'd never wish any individual harm, I feel the monarchy is an outdated institution that needs wound down with all assets (land, palaces, grace & favour homes etc) used for public endeavours.

I support the idea of a genuinely fair wage for all. Whilst not anti-capitalist, I do think the wage divide between many CEOs and the workforce is no longer justifiable and don't necessarily subscribe to the 'it's what the market dictates' rhetoric, to me that's a useful line to trot out by those lucky enough to be in those positions.

So, with the usual jokes held back please, what am I?

Companies with socialist values was a thing in the 20's and 30's certainly before the war anyway. (Think Cadbury and crittals, likely other firms aswell that I don't know of)

Unfortunately since the war this way of thinking moved away and became more about profits than doing good for staff and community and business.

This was forced by businesses being crippled from the war effort, and the economy being shot to pieces.

Globalization is predominantly to blame on this one.

I'm with you and have the same thoughts.

OOI, one of the questions is:

Because corporations cannot be trusted to voluntarily protect the environment, they require regulation.

According to that test I'm a left libertarian with a left authoritarian bias

Once that gets out the plumbers will be all over you.

The quiz is American, and so I think anyone outside of America will be considered left judging by some of the questions. I.e should women be allowed to have careers or should they be expected to stay at home something along them lines anyway

Stay at home of course! I want my tea on the table when I walk through the door.

Yes it looks to be from USA
I'm not far from Mottie

We as a society probably NEED to be more authoritarian than we'd personally like to be, just because of the plain bad behaviour of too many individuals, driven by selfishness and greed. And testosterone?
