What the heck caused this?

I'd say the holes are approx. the circumference of a AAA battery. To me it looks as though something has maybe burrowed in at the top and burrowed out at the bottom. Regardless, what do you reckon has caused it? For reference, I'm in the UK (Scotland.)

As they eat their way out of the timber, the mature house longhorn beetles create holes between 6-10 mm in diameter. Compared to the common form of woodworm, common furniture beetle, house longhorn leaves significantly larger holes.


If seen in Scotland, maybe more proof of the effects of global warming!

Maybe a good spray with Everbuild Triple Action or similar?

I've got an old can of Cuprinol 5 Star Wood Treatment so might use that. Does it have a shelf life? Had the can for years and can't find any info re how long it's good for once opened.
