Hi

Our freeholder wants GBP700 just to give us permission to put in double glazing
As we won't be able to afford this extra amount, what would be the best way to keep more heat in/let less cold in through the windows?

Thanks!

Your freeholder sounds a curious character, to say the least.

You can install secondary glazing units, not as neat, nor as efficient, but it will help

Do you pay ground rent to the freeholder. Is it Estates & Management by any chance.

If it is one of these big companies that holds the freehold, they have thousands of properties on their books. They won't ever check. We just went ahead with the work without saying anything, just like all our neighbours.

Thanks for your replies.
They do have more than 1 property they are freeholders of and possibly many more, so we could (theoretically) just go ahead and do it I suppose. Will also check out dextrous's idea as well.

I deal with quite a few land lords who cannot put in double glazing and instead fit secondary glazing. It can be much cheaper and very effective. Have a look on www.********.co.uk. There is both fixed and opening solutions there. Hope that helps.

£700 for this kind of permission is way excessive.

IIRC, you may be entiled to request information from the freeholder to justify his charges.

Otherwise, make a complaint to the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal, who can set 'reasonable' administration charges and override the lease.

Don't be bullied by the freeholder into such extortionate charges
