After a hard night's drinking many moons ago, I commented to my mate that I had "too much" to drink last night.
His reply was "I didn't think that was possible".

Last time I was in Brittany, I went to a place that sold wine by the litre -I took in an empty milk bottle which was filled to the brim with a nice Merlot for about 7 Euros for 2 litres -better than most wines Ive drunk in UK
I've had better house reds in France than the posh labels sold here. I'm sure the scoundrels (see what I did there?) sell us their dregs and keep the best for the domestic markets.

Unless the UK wholesale buyers don't want to pay the going price for good stuff.

Maybe that's where they are going wrong. If there are better Chilean, Australian, Italian and British wines at the right price.
I'm talking as someone who doesn't know wines..

No, I'm no connoisseur.

But my Dad knew his way round a bottle or two and said that the French used to be top, but over the decades, there were lots of wine producing regions around the globe that were catching up and now have overtaken them.

Apparently we are not so bad at producing a nice drop.

The wedding I went to in Israel we were offered a glass of wine as we walk into the reception. I have never had a white wine I've enjoyed. This however was lovely, I've still not found out what it was apart from it was a white wine.

My understanding (heresay and quite possibly wrong) was that after sending vines all over the world, France was hit by a blight that destroyed most of their vineyards and they were never the same thereafter.

To put the OP's 'splutter' into context...

In the UK...

"Supermarkets are throwing away the equivalent of 190 million meals a year that could be given to the hungry"

"Just 24,242 tons was passed on to the needy out of 282,338 tons of unsold food approaching its use-by or best-before date"

One must put things into perspective rather than adopt a 'holier than thou' approach!

Bad years and good years. The same for any vineyard.

Been here before haven't we with the eu countries expecting a handout, butter mountains was another.

It's great to see you using a 17 year old article to justify a lame attack on the EU, boyo.

Lol.
