Having owned a cocker spaniel many moons ago I found mine to be easy to be trained and obedient after puppy stage.
Never having the opportunity to put it to test round my children ill never know whether I would have trusted it to be left alone with my children but it always gave the impression it could be trusted.

Our dog is well trained and behaved but we would never leave it alone in a room with our grandson. I wouldn’t leave any dog alone with a child, even a chihuahua. Many years ago, we had central heating fitted in our house and one of the partners wives had just had a baby. We later heard that his Jack Russell had killed it in his cot when he had been left sleeping in a room, unattended but with the door open when he was only six weeks old.

No. None of the other cocker owners we know haven’t got either small children or grandchildren but they have all said they would never leave them alone in a room with a small child. No matter how well behaved a dog is, there always the chance that a small child could tread on their foot or their tail and the dog could react by instinct and snap at them. A mate of mine's wife has a 1/2” scar a over her top lip where she did just that as a child and I know of one other girl, years ago who did the same and she also ended up with a scar in exactly the same place. Both had just one snap from a dog. Don't know the breeds though. Either could have been badly scarred or even lost an eye.

We need more bans and controls on certain dogs because the owners won't change.

Yes, a poodle attacked me twice in the same woods.
I was on my bike and the first time it took me by surprise.
The stupid female owner (can't call her a lady) had one of them stupid extendable leads and it was broken.
Anyhow, fortunately it was winter and I had double layers and I moved my leg, so its bite didn't do anything.
After a few chosen words with the female I went.
A couple of weeks later, same woodland, I see the bast@rd walking in my opposite direction, this time, unleashed.
So I deviated off path to go between trees, but it'd seen me and started coming towards me.
I made it fly into thick brambles never to re-emerge.
And I gave the 2 fingers and a #@$# you at the female owner.
Never seen them again.
I hope it's dead.

How can anyone who understands that simple fact decide to keep a dog as a 'pet' in the first place?

Could you hand on heart claim that any dog you have ever 'owned' could not at any point in time turn on a person and return to it's basic instincts?

Yes, and I can smell bullshyt through the wifi.
The same dog had attacked many cyclists in the area and someone put pictures on local forums.
The dog didn't like cyclists and the stupid owner let it attack them.

Dogs chase cyclists all the time. Go faster and you'll be fine. Oh, and change your deoderant, just to be sure. It isn't the wi-fi you smell.

No, they don't.
I come across dogs everyday on my bike and they usually don't chase me.
Most dogs are well trained and ignore cyclists and people on foot.
Some dogs are nasty and should be on a short lead and muzzled when in a public place.
But the owners think that because their dog doesn't attack them, it is fine to let them attack others.
Fortunately I have very strong legs and a kick never fails to hurt.
You mention going faster.
I cycle in woods on a mountain bike, how fast do you think one can go?
20mph at best, topping 23/24mph on flat gravel.
Besides, why should I be the one running away when having a dog out of control is an offence.
Unless you tell me that cycling in presence of dogs is an offence...
