It'll cost you! ;) American black walnut is currently running around £50 to £60 per cubic foot, in 1in thickness, unplaned rough sawn - or about twice the price of oak. Machining runs around £22 or so per hour (+VAT) up here for planing (more in Londonm I'd say) and there's a couple of hours in that lot at least. I'd expect a bed like that to consume 4.5 to 7 cubic feet of walnut not to mention a few cubic feet (say 2.5 to 4) of 1in steamed beech for the slats and hidden construction stuff.

Anyone know what prices S.L. Hardwoods charge in this sort of stuff (they're in your general area)

here is SLH 's site, give them a ring and ask for Sean, he will probably want to know sizes & lengths so if you can fax a cutting list that will help.

If you go to PAR timber and select Walnut you will get an idea of costs but thats just for ex 25mm timber that they keep in stock.
