Which size allen key bolt do I need?

Size of allen key, which fits, is not a guide to the thread size of the bolts. Your best bet is to take the bolt size you need, to a nut and bolt stockist. Even then, you might struggle to match the head of the bolt, some manufacturers of furniture, have bolts specially made for their use.
I'll have to look hard for local stores, as all the hardware shops long since closed down. There might be somewhere.

In the time it takes, you could order a couple of packs of screws. They might arrive by Saturday.

You can ask to look at the packet before you buy and see if correct size.

And if needed whilst you are there...

I've ordered the M5. There's no hurry, as I only noticed the bolts (not screws - they go into metal, threaded sockets) were missing today after using the chair for years. I've had an education in bolts today, for which I am grateful to the various commenters here.

Yes - However I am presuming Chinese cheese bolts is what are already in the chair, which itself is likely from china.

I would have recommended better if they were looking to bolt down say a pagoda.

Either way - they ordered other bolts (perhaps my ebay or Screwfix A2 Stainless steel suggestions) before my cheesey steel suggestion. :>

Some suppliers can be very helpful. If you take a photo or drawing of your existing allen headed bolt and give the dimensions you need they may well be able to assist.

Kays on ebay do a good range if you want yo cover your back on sizes
