During the sound and fury of the Brexit omnishambles, our Tory government has quietly slipped out an announcement that might go almost un-noticed.

"DWP accused of sneaking out hit to retired couples during Brexit row

Limiting pension credit access could reduce joint incomes by up to £7,000, it is claimed"

"Ministers have been accused of “sneaking out” changes to state pensions which experts on Monday night said could leave some retired couples more than £7,000 a year worse off. On the eve of a crucial Brexit vote, the Department for Work and Pensions announced changes that would limit access to pension credit, a top-up for the poorest pensioners, from May.

The change was set out in a statement by Guy Opperman, pensions minister, published on the parliamentary website on Monday evening. The change will restrict pension credit payments for couples where both are not over state pension age, currently 65 for men and women. Currently, an older couple can claim pension credit if they are “mixed age” or where one is over state pension age and one is not."

No surprise that our government seeks to tighten the noose round the necks of people hoping to receive assistance. "The poorest pensioners"

That is why this Brexit debacle is a massive distraction and needs to be sorted out sooner rather than later, then the government can be held to account.

The problem with that argument is that governments have been doing the same well before Brexit was thought of...

And they have never been 'held to account'!

Quitters unfortunately were led to believe that it was all the EU's fault, and yet even the slightest glimpse at provisions across the channel show that the UK is often at or near the bottom of any 'league table' when it comes to looking after the general population and those most in need...

Indeed also in most of the developed world, and some third world nations...

Percentage of average working wage paid by country as a state pension.

This will of course change when we leave the EU according to the unicorns as they gather around their money tree

The "bedroom Tax" was just the tip of the (media aware) iceberg - they've moved the goalposts so much on benefits and pensions that the posts sit in a trench ( metaphorically )

Likely because most of the third world are living in the UK thanks to you smelly left wing socialists. Revel in what you've created.

Doesnt mean much, a nice picture of a seagull wouldve been as relevant :ROFLMAO:

UK state pension is a flat rate and often topped up with private schemes.
Oh and now employers have to pay into a scheme for their employees

In France min state pension is £130 / week.

In Germany pension insurance payments are compulsory.

etc etc.

Yes it is

No, it isn't. Calling it a flat-rate pension doesn't make it true.

People retired prior to 2016 don't get a flat rate pension

People retired subsequently might, but usually don't.

Do you get a flat-rate pension?
