"white box- close" popping up

I'll not step on Tony's toes....
You will not be stepping on my toes  I am sure that the OP will value any help and suggestions to improve the situation - so would I ;)

Currently I am thinking that the "white box" is just a symptom of a corrupted system - maybe old dial up networking related or even a "dialler scam" application that has been inadvertently downloaded.

Anyway I think that the Task Manager issue should be a priority as well as the AV and Firewall issues.

EDIT: Just read Igorian's post - makes a lot of sense to me and in the long run may be a lot quicker than "farting about" trying to fix a broken system

Depends on what OP wants.

We can do a 'tidy up' job , but obviously a clean install is always better. But as igorian already mentioned, putting ME back on is not ideal. XP would be better , but obviously that involves more cost, and only the OP can make that decision.

Tell us what you want Cautious and we'll help you either way.

If you suspect that something left over is causing this problem might I suggest CrapCleaner (freeware). It removes the crud left over from less than full removals. Get it here http://www.ccleaner.com/download

When its installed run it using the 'Issues' button - then scan for issues. You'll be offered a choice to fix all issues - I usually say yes, then I leave any shared issues by saying no. (just to err on the side of caution)

I also see you have trouble with Task Manager not working. Might I also suggest this program it is described as Task Manager on steroids - again freeware - but from MICROSOFT (aghh) - but unusually good

Here is a good article (very long) about that process explorer

Finally 2Cautious (sorry for the length of this) - I have just removed a virus from a laptop that exhibited a similar annoying pop-up window. All that was required was to use System Restore. The owner was worried that her university stuff would be lost but documents were saved by the system.

ccleaner could be some help, but are you sure Process Explorer will work with the OP's OS - Windows Me?

Yes Tony you are correct. Windows Me is not supported in the latest revisions of Process explorer. Sorry 2Cautious.

However a similar program is available as a 30 days free trial on ZDNET. You have to register an email though. I am registered and It's called 'Security Task Manager'.

Go to this page - the program is third on the list. Once you select download you'll be asked to sign in or register.

Latest update on dreaded "pop-up". Yesterday I installed (free) Comodo BOClean anti malware software and wonder of wonders, the white box is no more!

Again many thanks for your help re. this matter.

This isnt much help but curious, if you move your mouse pointer around the white box do options suddenly appear? like your mouse pointer is doing a screen refresh of sorts.

I know nought about the original posted problem but this may help

my old laptop runs on ME (in my opinion better than XP or Blo**y Vista!)

i had freeserve / wanadoo and changed to NTL broadband had all sorts of problems like you until I did a search for wanadoo and deleted every file that came up the i did the same with freeserve and hey presto everything worked fine

hope this helps

Tim--- no reaction at all, just click close and off it went (box)--- but all actions then slow ie. say, go to "next page" and pc would take a long time to move to next page , but once there mouse would work ok.

Kevin--I also did as you re. deletions, but no solution.

I`ve just turned BOClean off and box still does NOT appear, seems BO has " shaken the tree" (techie term!! ) and removed the last of wanadoo/freeserve.

Thanks all-- have a good day
