just went to my local supermarket for a sandwich? i prefer white bread so all i could find was a reduced fat with no spread .yuk.all the other sarnies had brown bread  brown with bits in/wholemeal/brown with reduced fat spread.all i want is a traditional white bread chicken/ham/salad sarnie.
why do people not have the option to buy proper food that tastes nice & looks good.they even do reduced fat sauce/crisps/biscuits/curry/chocolate etc............
i don't care about fat, salt, calories, gluten etc.... just want the option to buy salty, lardy, yummy food.
btw i've had diabetes for over 20 yrs and smoke and drink and feel fit as a fiddle with no problems with eyes/heart/breathing etc...

If you find the time to actually look at the ingredients (correct pair of reading glasses required) you will find that most "reduced fat" or "sugar free" etc, etc, items have more artificial c**p in them than your average "unhealthy" offerings. I try to avoid foods with unneccessary additives, I just don't see why I should fill myself up with a load of unwanted chemicals.

GIVE US MORE WHITE BREAD. Right behind you OMGWHYD!!

I reckon the SubWay butty shop franchises are OK for choice.

there are other small sandwich shops that do REAL sarnies.the point i was trying to make was its the big supermarkets that seem to take up valuble shelf space with organic/healthy/low fat versions of normal food.my grandparents used to eat tripe/pigs trotters/big fat beef dripping sarnies with a small pile of salt & they lived well into their 90's
"better to burn out than to fade away"

See what you mean. Mind you if you go in the big supermarkets around lunchtime many of people read all the c**p on the labels.

Most older people were brought up on fatty foods and seem OK on it.

On an industrial estate near me there's a massive factory resembling a petro-chemical plant, stinks to high heaven, they are one of the biggest makers of low fat spreads in the UK.

It may be me, but I feel safer with Lu**ak dropping out of a cow!

To many of these ideas of what is good and bad for you are proved wrong.

what if i get run over by a bus tomorrow with no white bread

What a return !! You bin off building that house then Ohmy' ? Sound a little grieved ... not bin chased up the street by a lunatic again have you ? ;)

have you ever thought they may have just sold out of white bread sarnies, and only the brown ones were left?

I prefer wholemeal bread personally, only ever eat white if it is baguette or bloomer (can't stand the sliced white loaf!). But I can see your quandry. I would hate it if I went into a sandwich shop and they only sold sarnies made with mighty-white I would probably be so affronted that one of the few English culinary triumphs that is respected all over the world, was being ba***rdised in this manner. ;)

I have read that wholemeal/granary bread, despite tasting so yummy, wears your teeth down more quickly... in fact Roman soldiers, who ate mostly bread, have been dug up to find their teeth worn practically to the jawbone.

It's all a matter of preference. In the sandwich shop at work there is a "suggestions" book. Whilst queueing I have glanced in it, and seen comments such as "Why does the tuna and sweetcorn baguette have lettuce in it?". Whilst that bothered this person enough to write it in, there are obviously enough people who really don't care too much either way, or even like a bit of 95% water 5% roughage in their sarny! Although why they put something as strong-tasting and gross as cucumber in a chicken salad sandwich, I will never know

The current trend is for healthier eating, wholemeal is perceived as (and let's face it, probably is) healthier than white bread. Chicken sandwiches are nutritionally healthier than spam sandwiches. I would sooner be able to buy a sandwich without any form of butter/spread in it, but unfortunately for me, I am in the minority there. And it's not like you can pick the butter out.

my grandparents used to eat tripe

Although I am yet to meet someone over the age of 60 who doesn't say "BUY SANDWICHES?! ARE YOU MAD?! I could make it at home for 10 new pee!"

Got into different eating habit at work gave up buying meal or sandwiches at canteen ... Began taking food in tupper-ware like pot (Addis. 1/2 litre), chicken then fish (sardines, Salmon etc) salad, alternating daily, plus two pieces of fruit .. prepared by yours truly for self and children each morning.
Cheap, tasty and relatively healthy I reckon ...

P

I did that for a while, even kept a bottle of balsamic dressing in my desk!

Somehow got back on to the sarnies.

My dear Mater is like that:

Remember the character on GGM?

"You can make it at home for nothing!"

Now I'm interested in Sandwiches, more so than before, cos this fat b@stard is on a diet.

I try to make stuff at home, but it does not always work out so I end up buying one sometimes.

Beware! Look at the fat content PER PACK. Sometimes the fat content is as high as 48%!

To put that into perspective (the old dairyman bit is coming out now!) that is the same % fat content as double cream!

How can a bl00dy sandwich be nearly half fat? That's ridiculous......

Let's get it into context, The "dangers" from eating the wrong types of food are to be taken as warnings and advice, you will not harm yourself eating the occasional fatty food, if anything a small amount of fat in your diet is actually necessary, what the advice gives is that you cut out eating fatty food only and balance your diet properly, that's all! If you exercise adequately you will keep your body fit and it will be able to process The "bad" as well as the"good" food with no detriment to you. The advice given tends to sway towards the people that don't look after themselves.
