I just don't get all these nonsense comments. I don't mind a bit of jesting like some have done, posting ZZZZzzzzzzz etc, but now I'm being abused. It's not right and not justified. The easily led and weak minded are showing their base natures. They belong in newsnet and likely troll all the time.

Why do you quote what I said? What is wrong with you? Are you an idiot or what?

The conditions are what the council have told me. The whole post was trying to figure what tradesmen might fit in with these conditions. What is wrong with that? Nothing. So, what are some people getting their knickers in a twist for? Nothing.

Some trashy person says something negative, not in jest, and all the weak-minded, easily-led, low-life makes it's appearance.

C'mon richard lighten up mate. Your post was ok, but you didn't seem to be listening to anyone. your post also went on and on when in reality the job your talking about is a very straight forward simple job that you DONT need to be gas safe registered to do.

I don't mind folks poking fun - bantering and taking the micky at whatever foibles that might be apparent. But, some of the most recent posts were much closer to being abusive.

This thread should have finished a few posts ago, but it's being maintained now with abusive talk from some quarters.

Hi. My sincerest apologies for causing any upset by what I said.

Because of the previous negative posts I was minded to thinnk you were jumping on that bandwagon. Then I wondered maybe you were'nt, but were being complimentary - which you have confirmed.

Council don't know that I moved the cistern. So, I'm not that quite a perfect model tennant. :D

Anyway, peace.

I am a gas safe registered engineer. You do not have to have a gas safe registered engineer to move a radiator. You do need a gas safe registered engineer to work on anything that will involve gas, or the correct functioning of a gas boiler, such as moving a flue or changing a gas-related component inside the boiler. Moving a radiator does not involve any gas or the correct functioning of the gas parts of the boiler.
Just get on with moving the rad yourself and don't tell the council. If you don't know how to move a rad connected to a combi boiler, I would charge £70 (plus any extra pipework) if you were within reasonable distance of where I live. £50 for the labour plus £20 for Corrosion Inhibitor, plus extra if any more pipework was needed. I go into a lot of council properties servicing boilers and if you saw some of them you would not be asking the question. Some of them make me want to take off all my clothes and throw them away as soon as I am out of the front door. The council will not be interested in your radiator, unless you cause a ceiling to collapse by not doing it properly.

Hi. You are too far away, but your price is a figure that I'm hoping I can get the job done for. It's reasonable.

The thing is, I've contacted the council already requesting permission to remove an inside wall, and of necessity that requires relocation of the radiator. So, the radiator has become involved (unfortunately) in the conditions the council has stipulated, simply because it's on the wall I want to remove.

And the stipulations, the conditions mentioned are to send in the name of a "gas engineer" and to send in the "gas safe number" of the tradesman.

Perhaps along with others, in light of the work required, I've been scratching my head about the conditions. On a purely technical level, it seems clear that a plumber, even without being gas safe, would be a professionally competent person.

But, knowing how things are on the purely technical level is not necessarily all I need to appreciate. The more insightful here have looked beyond the purely technical and have an understanding of what is in the mind of the council, or what the concerns of the council are that are reflected in the conditions.

For instance, someone said the council are concerned that whoever does the job are properly insured. That is going a bit deeper than just the technical aspects of who is competent. It's probably saying, as long as the council feel safe with respect to potential claims, they will take a plumber within the term "gas engineer". But only those who they feel safe with. Now that kind of insight is beginning to get to the root of the conditions, allowing for their interpretation, regarding who is acceptable for the council. Really, my subject title should have asked the question who is acceptable for the council, not who is professionally competent.

I'm not sure if I have any leeway about the gas safe number, I may have no option to provide it, but perhaps that is not so significant to my costs.

So, after all the talk, it seems likely a plumber, who is gas safe, who is properly insured, is likely within the conditions the council laid down. That was not something I intuitively comprehended when scratching my head over the conditions.

The only reason I can think of why the council mentioned gas engineer and to provide the gas safe number, is to try to ensure the tradesman is insured, sufficiently respectable, solvent, whatever.

A bit odd I know. But, I have no other explanation. Because on the technical level, it makes little sense.

Richard-
Get a quote from a gas engineer, since that is what they want. Also go to CIPHE, Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers. They will point you to a local competent plumber who will have insurance, and get a quote from them.
I bet your council Jobsworth doesn't know the difference between gas and water. They certainly don't know that you don't need a gas safe registered engineer to change a tap washer.
Sorry if this sounds stupid, but water is different to gas: you can be a gas-only gas man or a water-only plumber. There are thousands of each. A gas only gas man will never touch a radiator and a water only plumber will never touch any gas. Or you can be a gas registered engineer and a member of the chartered institute of plumbing and heating engineers as well.
Just ask a gas safe registered engineer, if thats what the stupid council wants. Its only worth arguing if the gas man wants £100 more than the plumber.
And by the way, if the gas boiler tries to light when the work is being done, it wont light because it has water-present sensors. If there is insufficient water in it, it wont light. So its perfectly safe.[/u]

Fooking 'ell is this still going on? 4 pages on who can move a rad.

If it was HOW to move a rad then fair enough. Jesus. It must be a council tenant thing - not enough to to or worry about in life.

I dunno, maybe its just me.
