Does it need to? If the case is as clear cut as this one, then there should be an ultimate penalty available - why waste all that money in keeping them alive for no good purpose?

Its not a waste, any more than having a police force instead of every-man-for-himself-vigilantism is a waste. Any more than having courts where evidence is tested instead of summary justice is a waste. Its one of the costs of having a civilised society instead of a barbaric one.

A state which kills people in vengeance is not a civilised one.
