I've noticed it too. I think it's because someone at DIYnot HQ has, in their infinite wisdom, decided to start selling advertising space down the right-hand side of the page as well as the top and bottom.

I have Adblock running so I don't see the ad, but I do see the blank space.

Admin, I commend you for your enterprise, but I submit that this is a Bad Idea™.

This forum has to be paid for, as it becomes more popular so more bandwidth is used , hence the adverts.

But yes i think it sucks too, and NO, they are nothing to do with me, but then again, if admin don't try, they don't know.

so the vote is?

I wonder will admin run a poll?

do you think so? Because it looks like the I's have already been dotted and the t's have already been crossed!

I think the more appropriate question would be the usefullness of the adverts anyway.

Has anyone here, at any point, ever, even clicked on one of the adverts, let alone go on to purchase anything through them?

Thought not.

I clicked on the one at the top and got diverted to BobVila.com DIY forum :D

I gave you a way to get rid of the ads - and my post was deleted.

Fancy that.

I clicked on the ad for tin ceilings...it now looks great over my endless pool ;)

Greetings :)

I'd like to remind everyone that the forum is funded by the advertising and if everyone went the route of avoiding them with specialist software then the forum would be no more :( This forum is very bandwidth hungry and the banner ads are the only way to fund such a site unless people would prefer a subscription service (I assume not). We do try to keep the ads as understated as possible (we don't allow pop-ups, pop-unders, big imposing expanding flash banner ads etc.) so as not to spoil the overall user experience!!

:)

I would say that ads like the new ones down the RH side are just that - imposing - and certainly not understated.

It doesn't bother me too much as the ad itself isn't displayed in my browser, but it does upset the layout of the forum and makes it look very untidy.

There's an element of hypocrisy here, as the forum rules do not allow us to have avatars or picture signatures for the very reason of "forum tidiness".

i agree, i dont like the banner adds.

admin, how about another ad under the (or above) the current ones?

I have to admit i do have banner adds on my sites, it does pay for them, but down the side , nah

other thing is as post gets longer banner ad stops, that's worse.

The right hand side advert is a trial, not necessarily a permanent feature, I take on board what you say, we'll see how it goes and review it over the next couple of weeks.
