Why all the fuss about Rishi's wife?

I've said it before, and many don't admit it, often it comes down to envy and/or possibly not understanding the ins and outs. And of course with people struggling financially due to the perfect economic storm we're living through, tensions will be even higher when stories like this break.

Assuming nothing illegal is going on, then it's almost if not entirely a non story.

Imagine you started a business and a decade later you were worth hundreds of millions. Your financial/tax advisors tell you this ... 'this tax year you only have to pay £1.6 million in tax. However, if you want to do everything from a moral perspective, you could pay £3.4 million. How would you like us to proceed?'

How many people, hand on heart, can honestly say they'd pay the latter?

Person in 2005: It's an absolute disgrace what CEOs earn! I read of one that takes home £3 million a year!!!
Same person in 2020: I'm proud to be CEO of Acme Ltd. (The person is earning £3 million a year.)

I wonder if the CEO will give 75%+ of their remuneration away each year? I'm assuming yes cause in 2005 they said it was a disgrace for someone to earn such an amount.

If Lord Rothemere's palatial home catches fire, will he phone the Nice fire brigade to help?

Or will it be the UK taxpayer funded public services that come to the rescue?

If Mrs Sunak is robbed of her jewellery, will she call the Calcutta police?

Public services are paid for by public taxation.
She pays taxes on her UK income which contributes to fund the UK police and UK fire brigade, same as everyone else.

I don't earn any money in india, therefore i don't contribute to the Calcutta police. Rishi's wife does.

She's rich for reasons most don't understand, she's non domicile for tax purposes for reasons most don't understand.

I say "burn the witch" & then we can share out the money amongst all the won't workers.

The idea behind non-doms is reasonable, the way that you become a non Dom is not. It's mostly inheritance from aristocratic parents or if you're a millionaire that buys the ability to avoid tax that normal people can't.

It's also not a universal concept. Americans get taxed on foreign income wether they like it or not. It's a strange situation where Brits are less taxed than Americans.

India have a strange tax law for dual nationals, India and UK. It means she just pays 10% tax on dividend income from her Indian business which she holds a lot of..

I was more interested in the why than details but recollect $1b and and 90%. Pretty sure that is correct but............

Guess which channel that came from, BBC.

The idea that people living in the UK should pay UK tax is not based on envy.

If a process/system/policy/legislation legally allows something, blame that, not the individual. Was it right x years back that a politician could claim x thousands in expenses for a newly installed garden pond? No. However blame the system that rubber stamped the claim just as much if not more than the individual.

Envy, either consciously or otherwise, is often partly linked to folk saying 'this is ridiculous!!!!'

As humans, we are full of double standards depending on where we are on the socioeconomic scale.

But what do you think the belief "people living in the UK should not have to pay UK tax if they are very rich" is based on?

I wonder if all this anger against Rishi's wife is because she's married to a Tory or just not the right colour?

If only people just focussed on the fact that this is legal and endorsed by out government.
The idea that paying tax is "optional" is a privilege reserved for the very rich. The proprietor of the Daily Wail is just one example.

Our government made the laws.
Is it legal? Probably, is it right that it's legal, probably not.

The rank hypocrisy of the chancellor benefiting by avoiding tax on his family's money whilst boosting taxes for everyone else is relevant.

I believe there was a bit of noise when Boris's dad got himself registered as a non Dom as well. But I might be getting confused.

If the tax laws have been contrived unfairly, then it is not a non-story.

Surely you know that this is a recognised scandal?
