The screw didnt seem loose when I un screwed it although it was in there deep, had trouble getting it out, so maybe it was screwed into the insulation!
Probably not, as bas has suggested. There's plenty of length on the conductors. The terminal and/or screw have likely been burned by arcing making removal more difficult.
