the mods are stepping over there boundarys and need to be reeled back in

You know as well as I/we do why this forum (DIY) is popular. Many of the regulars fill this (your) forum with excellent advice, making it ever popular = more people visiting the forum = possible more revenue from add-words clicks.
Regulars also fill most of the general chat, treat it as a coffee-break.

MODS are a strange thing lately, are they volunteers, if so, you should tell them NOW what the aim of your site is. It's not a 'get-even' opportunity for them
