If it was made for the American market, it might be UNF or UNC

You can look up tables of dimensions and TPI.

Start by looking at quarter-inch
Which is a bit bigger than M6

Or you could extract the stud and thread in a new one (some studs however pass right through into the fuel tank.)

How do I know the thread will be the same if I can’t find a nut.
