Hi

As per title im looking to hard wire LED strips for an under stairs unit from a pre existing lighting circuit.

I’ve read many of the other posts but nothing seems to have my scenario. Apologies if I’ve missed something.

I’m looking to add led strip to a set of under-stair units - sadly there are no adjacent 13amp feeds.

There is however a light switch which will become redundant - I’m looking to change the stair lights into led app controlled bulbs so the fittings can have a constant power supply and this switch is the second switch on the circuit so we could still if necessary turn the lights off with the switch at the top of the stairs.

So my question - how do I best convert the light switch to allow the addition of a led driver.

I have a few ideas but happy for others or guidance on any of them prior to contacting an electrician to do the work.

In all the below scenarios it should be noted the wiring will be inaccessible without moving a large unit mostly full of books so us in a relatively safe area away from people and I would be bypassing the switch currently at this point.

Least favourite

Remove switch replace with junction box hard wire LED driver into junction box attach driver to wall put face plate on junction box leaving enough slack on screws to not crush cables.

Second least favourite

Remove switch replace with 13amp socket plug and go transformer - rely in fact that it would take an hour to remove unit full of books so chances of plugging anything else into the socket almost zero.

Other options

Replace switch with 5amp socket - wire transformer into 5amp plug

Replace switch with flex outlet - hard wire transformer etc

My other option is to install a new 13 amp socket but this would involve significant removal of floorboards etc given location.

Any advise welcomed.

Thanks

First of all, you'll have to check if you got a neutral available at the switch.
