Hey all

I’ve just fitted a new basin and the thread on the waste is leaking. It’s coming out underneath the nut that the trap is screwing on to. It’s a mcalpine trap so I don’t think it’s that. However, when I screw the trap on. It doesn’t go tight it just keeps turning. I tried some ptfe but that hasn’t helped. It was a cheap waste so I’m assuming that may be the problem.

Any tips on how to solve? I don’t think it’s leaking between the waste and the sink. Just the waste and the trap.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Been overtighten or cross threaded. This has caused damage to thread. Just buy another. It's plastic so doing overtighten

Take it apart and show us pictures. Missing or perished gasket perhaps, might end up with a nice fillet of silicone..

It’s almost like the thread is too small for the trap. You can wobble it off. But should both be 40mm. The leak is coming under the nut where the blue arrow is pointing. Everything above it appears dry so I’m assuming it’s the looseness of the connection.

All the parts are brand new. Wouldn’t expect the trap to be at fault being mcalpine.

Clean under the rubber seal.
I think you have a bit of compatibility problems.
If you have a McAlpine trap buy a McAlpine waste.

Could it be a euro waste and a uk trap lads?
As above its acompatabiliy, you could probably bodge it with tape or sealant

Yeah think you’re all right. Just got a mcalpine waste and it’s fitting much better. Annoyingly it’s not Matt black on the top like everything else in the bathroom. So might try ordering a different one off Amazon and see if that works better than the one I’ve got.

Any tips on removing the waste, it’s siliconed in.

Cheers!

Silicone remover. Will soften it up.
Read instructions. Test it.
We used on our uPVC door ok

You shouldnt need PTFE tape on the waste thread when the nut feels tight when all put together, the rubber seal is the sealing face not the thread.
You could leave the black waste there are buy a EU-UK thread converter,

i used wd40 to remove silicon, had what seemed like a couple of tubes of the stuff on a toilet waste absolutely covered
I purchased some silicon remover, but that made little difference to what was left after i scrapped off
Meths , white spirit , as i had loads of that , in the end WD40 seemed to work the best for me
But i had the toilet out in the garden , so was easier to work with - and no problem with all the fumes

The fact that someone has previously used silicone on the black nut leads me to think that there were problems before hand.

Haha. That was me. The thread was a bit weird. I think some of the issue could be the waste itself. The YouTube video said to silicone it so was just following that but the thread did slant to the side a bit I’ve got a basin mate for when I replace it next.

Good to know. I might try a different waste first but didn’t realise they did converters.

Thanks all. Ordered a different waste off Amazon and that fit much better. The silicone wasn’t too bad to get off the previous one either. The tip on wd40 was great. Took 2 mins to take it off and I’ve not put it on the new one. Did try to use the basin mate but the thread wasn’t long enough.
