Had the heating turned on Monday evening because we had a new baby in the house, nothing on then for the rest of the week and the dull thud started Wednesday night at 10:30pm when we were in bed. Thursday evening started again every 40 seconds and lasted for about an hour, nothing Friday.

I'm not sure what you mean here; Did you get the noise on Monday while the heating was on?
Am I right in saying you had the heating off the rest of the week and the noise started on Wednesday? if so when did it stop?

The heating was on a week ago last Monday evening 12/04/10, then we didn't switch the heating on for the rest of the week, in fact we still haven't switched the heating on. There was no noise on Monday or Tuesday then Wednesday night the dull thud started at around 10:30pm and must have stopped sometime during the night because we eventually went to sleep. Thursday evening, started again every 40 seconds and lasted for about an hour, no noise on Friday or the weekend, but we know if we switch the heating on, it will start up again afterwards, there is no pattern to it - it can continue every 20 to 30 seconds or it can stop and start every 20 mins, it can continue for an hour or two or for longer periods. What we don't understand is how it can happen when nothing is switched on, no heating, no washing machine, no dishwasher, no toilet flushing, nothing at all, yet there must be some water movement causing the noise. We had the same old boiler for over 30 years with no problem, changed to a new boiler and this problem is driving us daft, there appears to be no solution. We have left the trv heads off and it's made no difference.

try switching the boiler off completely to rule out the heating system.if it persists, go down over avenues like next doors pipes banging. basically,a process of illimination.

sounds like ur expansion vessal it'nt doing it's job for taking up the expansion of water when heated ? its a big red drum sort of looking thing , press the nipple in where you test for pressure and if water comes out u need and new vessal

as your system is/was 30 years old, you may have an old gravity valve hidden away somewhere, unfortunately they used to hide them inside walls and other inaccesable places, you need to try and locate where the noise is coming from(I know master of the bleeding obvious).

We have tried to locate where the noise is coming from, if you listen upstairs it sounds as if its downstairs and if you listen downstairs it sounds as if it's upstairs, had my ear to the ground in every room, but thanks anyway.

We had the heating engineers back last weekend and asked them if we had a mini expansion vessel fitted on the mains water inlet to boiler, they said that we didn't need one. They are baffled by the noise and don't understand what's causing it, they said they couldn't understand why the banging occured when nothing is on, they haven't come across any like it before.
The last time we had the heating switched on was Friday when it was only on for approx one hour, today, Sunday, the banging started around six o'clock banging every 10 seconds going to every 30 seconds, still banging after an hour and half.

What type of house do u live in???? detached semi detached , flat ect ect???
:D semi detached could be the next door neighbour ??? entertaining his lady freind's , than again he would have to be on a viagra , overdose ??? :D

NO definitely not the neighbours, that's a completely different sound, I though this was a serious site anyway and I'm definitely not laughing at this problem! :(

Who's not being serious ??? went to a flat the other day nine pm , lady complaining of sound from boiler even when not on , hummung sound , yep u could definately here it through the wall's ect ect , transpired neighbour bought a fish tank a the sound was the pump ect ect :)

If u are getting a noise when your boiler is not on , no water being used , than I would suggest ????????? it is related to something else :)
