Both Napoleon and Hitler underestimated the Russians, the latest armchair generals seem to be making the same mistake, when the Nazis compared they own hi tech equipment to the Russians rusty tanks they sneered that they could overrun Russia during the summer and be back home by Christmas, the Russians didn't just defeat the Nazis they annihilated them. The Soviet Union for most of the 19th century was an absolute shambles, starting with the rise in socialism and then communism. It wasn't Russian fighting ability that won them the war it was their perniciousness. The Russians lured the Germans into a false sense of security and the Germans encroached too far and the weather destroyed their efforts almost completely on it's own. It was cunning not military might that won it. This was happening while Lenin/Stalin were searching out and destroying anyone in Russia deemed to be against the interests of the communist government.
A Russian General was asked how did it feel to get to Berlin he replied that the last time they invaded Europe they got as far as Paris.
