would flue fan failure stop boiler working?

Hi, I'm feeling good about this forum already. looking at previous posts there seems to be many knowledgable people posting here.

I have a Myson Apollo 50s boiler (1991). For 2 days the flue fan was making a loud high pitched noise whenever the boiler fired up. On the 3rd day the heating didnt come on when it was supposed to at 8am, so i check the boiler and found the fan had stopped working and the boiler had stopped firing up.

I've taken the cover off to inspect the flue fan. When i switch the boiler on the fan tries to turn, but it cant. if i give it a little spin with my finger it keeps spinning but not as quickly as it did when the boiler worked. Even when i start the fan rotating by hand the boiler still wont work.

So I'm assuming I need a new flue fan, no big deal, but I'm wondering why the boiler wont work with a fan failure. How would the boiler know the fan was not working? Am i correct to assume a fan failure would actually stop the boiler from working, or does that suggest something else is wrong and the fan not working is just a symptom rather than the problem.

Is there any way I can check to make sure the problem is actually the fan and not the fan's power supply? Does anyone know the voltage the fan should receive so i can check it with my multimeter?

I've been quoted £270 for a fan unit, thats just for the part, I'm planning to fit it myself. Does that sound like a good quote? It was over double what I expected.

Is there any way i can repair the fan unit, or at least get it working for a few weeks while I find a cheaper supplier?

Sorry for all the questions  i'm desperate.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

thanks, i'll try some WD40 on it after work.

hey i see you're in hartlepool :D

i'm only round the corner in coxhoe. can you supply parts? i'd be willing to buy a new fan unit from you if you can get me one cheap.

am i correct in thinking a fan failure would stop the boiler from trying to fire up?

Coz they're dead clever them boilers man.

i'm referring to the possibility of a negative feedback system that would send a signal to the pcb if the fan was not spinning sufficiently which would then stop the boiler from working. the fan works using an electromagnet, the rate at which it turns would have an effect on the return current to the pcb, which could be used to identify a fan failure and stop the boiler from igniting as a safety feature.

does that happen or not? or dont you know?
instead of sarcasm you could try to teach me something.

The fan is connected to an air pressure switch, whose purpose it is to determine if the products of combustion can safely be ejected. It is therefore one of the most important safety features of any boiler.

The comments you received are as a result of you attempting to replace a part of a boiler regulated by Corgi rules. Even worse, you tried to get one cheap of a registered gas installer

excellent, thankyou EliteHeat. that confirms a fan failure would stop the boiler working, and therefore is likely to be my problem.

When will you guys learn that he does not need to be registered so long as he is not being paid and he is competent

Now lets not start a 'competent' discussion we'll be here all night trying to decide the definition of that!

and when will you learn that if you don't fill the second part of the reg in you don't get into ARGI
