How much you save is down to how much of the job is labour, you'll still be paying VAT on materials

Course id use someone not VAT registered...for one they would be cheaper..and two theres no reason why they wouldnt be a good tradesperson..I was never VAT registered and I was a hell of a lot better than the guys around here that were...maybe a bit unfair that..but certainly better than most and as good as the rest.

VAT registration will give you an indication of his turnover but not the quality of his work.

As already mentioned check out his work and if happy with that proceed.
