You may drink beer in pubs with a meal at 16!

I've just read this. Is this true?

It is true, in England

The law was, I believe, intended to allow a family to go to a restaurant and allow youngsters to begin experiencing civilised drinking in controlled conditions, or a father to take sons to his club during the vac.

The youngster must be accompanied by an adult, and cannot buy the drinks himself, which fits the pattern.

I have been a licensee (and subsequently a DPS) in England, but not in Scotland where the law is different.

I think they can go in a pub with an adult at 14 but not drink alcohol.

"If you’re 16 or under, you may be able to go to a pub (or premises primarily used to sell alcohol) if you’re accompanied by an adult. However, this isn’t always the case. It can also depend on the specific conditions for that premises."
